A hat-trick from Brian Glasheen helped joint overnight leaders Donohill and District celebrate as they won the League Division 4 championship in style, hitting Ballyneale for seven at the West Tipp venue.
In a very close opening half, with both sides competing for every ball, Donohill and District broke the deadlock through John McGrath on 32 minutes. But Ballyneale got a deserved equaliser on 44 minutes through Robert Waters.
With top striker Ger O’Neill suspended someone else had to step up to the mark for the champions-elect and it was the much-travelled Brian Glasheen who did the honours, restoring Donohill’s lead after 50 minutes before making it 3-1 two minutes later. Ballyneale had the chance to reduce the deficit on the hour mark but missed a penalty and it proved a turning point, as the floodgates opened with Donohill adding four more goals in the last 12 minutes. With Ballyneale running out of steam due to a lack of competitive games, Brian Glasheen completed his hat-trick on 78 minutes. Then John McGrath added his second before goals from Joe Shanahan and Pa Hennessey completed the rout.
Undefeated Donohill went into this game knowing a draw would suffice to put them top and be crowned champions as their main challengers Clerihan had finished their campaign.
