Gardai in Cahir are seeking the assistance of members of the public who may have witnessed an attempted burglary at Cahir Post Office at around 5am on Wednesday morning, October 16.
A JCB was driven into a side window of the Post Office and Gardai are looking to speak to anyone who may have in the vicinity of the Post Office or the railway station between 3am and 5am.
There was nobody in the premises at the time, nothing was stolen and nobody was hurt. It is understood that the raiders were disturbed and they fled the scene, leaving the arm of the JCB partly inside the premises. Damage was done to the building and the scene was sealed off for a technical examination.
Independent TD Mattie McGrath has expressed his concern at the brazen nature of the attack.
“This was a premeditated and shocking assault on a vital community service for the people of Cahir and surrounding areas,” he said.
“I know that Henry Reidy and those who run the Post Office are decent hard-working people as is the staff so it is some small mercy that this violent attack did not occur during working hours when someone could have been seriously injured.”
