Local volunteers and people living with MS, are calling for support on World MS Day which is a key annual event to raise awareness, raise the issues and raise funds for vital services. People across South Tipperary are being encouraged to support local events, to email TDs highlighting the crisis in accessing neurology services and to either organise or attend an MS Ireland tea party in their homes, communities or workplaces. Money raised locally is spent locally.

To mark World MS Day 2013 people are being asked to share a motto that gives them strength in challenging times with the aim to harness this positivity. MS Ireland is urging people with MS, their families and friends and anyone who wants to support World MS Day to visit www.ms-society.ie and share a personal motto.

MS is usually diagnosed between the ages of 24 and 31 but contrary to perception, most people live active and fulfilling lives despite the physical and emotional challenges. MS is a life-long condition but is not terminal, and does not follow any particular pattern or set stages. It is unique to the individual.

Emma Rogan, MS Ireland’s policy and information officer, young person with MS and head of the Young People’s Meet Up Group said: “There is always positive energy around World MS Day and this year we are harnessing that energy and connecting people through their personal mottos. The idea is to share the mottos that strengthen and inspire everyone while raising awareness about living with Multiple Sclerosis. Share your motto and support World MS Day 2013.”

Multiple Sclerosis is the most common disabling neurological condition affecting young people in Ireland. More than 8,000 people live with MS in Ireland.

MS Ireland is also playing host to a celebrity auction and the public can bid on signed and framed images of artists, sports personalities and actors such as The Script, Imelda May, Brain O’Driscoll, Noel Gallagher, Primal Scream, Kodaline, Def Leppard, Damien Dempsey and Katie Taylor.
