The Cahir Tidy Towns Group are continuing to work through the hot weather and have been pumping water from the river onto the Memorial Garden since there has been a water hose ban in place by South Tipperary County Council.

It is great to see so many looking after their shrubs and there have been some lovely nameplates put in front of some shrubs. If anyone else wants to do the same they are welcome, but it might be better to put the name and number on the one plaque.

The next few weeks are vital to keep the town shining as we hope to have qualified for a second round of judging. We would also like to point out that the local Super Valu Competition’s closing date is next weekend and entry for each section is €5. There are 7 sections in total and they will be judged over the first 2 weeks in August. There will be fierce competition this year in the Hanging basket section and many shop fronts are also looking very well. There has also been a big effort put into some estates and it would be a pity if they didn’t all enter and be part of a great Awards night in September. Entry forms can be collected at the Enterprise Centre and dropped back in there also. Please do enter.

Finally, we would like to remind people that next weekend is our Church Gate Collection and we depend on this for our work during the year. It would be great to see all Memorial Garden shrub owners attend mass that weekend and contribute to the upkeep of the garden at the collection. We will try to organize a Mass for all members of the Garden next year.

So for the coming week its, Litter, Entry Forms and the all important Church Gate Collection which is taking place on this Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th July and we are asking people to support our cause as this is our main source of income for the year.

We meet as usual on Wednesday at 7pm.

CAHIR LIBRARY

The popular summer reading scheme is up and running and aimed at keeping children in the habit of reading during their school holidays. The child must read a minimum of six (6) books between now and September 1 and will get a medal in September for their efforts.

There is still time to join in, it is only one book a week to complete and earn a medal.

The occasion card making group meet every Monday afternoon at 2pm.

Membership of the library during these recession times is very reasonable - €7 per adult per year, social welfare and student rates are €1.50 and children are free. There is internet available in the library as well at very reasonable rates - €1 for 50 minutes and it is free for children but parents must sign them up for it at the desk on their first visit.

There is lots of information available in your local library, come in and browse. You don’t need to join to come and have a look. 

MEDIEVAL MADNESS

Last Sunday, Irwin’s Yard hosted a Medieval Madness Event in aid of the children’s cancer ward in Crumlin Hospital. Quite a few people came along in their finest medieval attire and enjoyed a sultry evening of food, drink and merry music making!

The winners of the prizes for best male/female on the day were Catherine O’Donoghue, who was ‘The Witch’ on the day and Sir Martin Collins. There was raffle to raise funds and TD Mattie McGrath was taken to ‘the stocks’ where his face was the target of quite a few sponges and all in good spirits and for a very good cause! There was a pig on a spit provided by Mericia and Colin Fitzgerald of Tugela Foods to feed the crowd. Jousting in the form of a person being piggy backed by another, wielding a bread stick aimed at a water balloon strapped to the opposition’s chest had hilarious consequences. ‘The Witch’ was tied to a tree and stoned (water balloons again!) all followed by music by the popular, ‘High Decibel’.

All in all it was an excellent evening’s entertainment. Well done to the fair Lady Emma Fitzgerald, MC Pat O’Dwyer, all her other helpers and Irwin’s Yard in their unusual bid to raise funds for such a fantastic cause.

SADDLESORE FOR CRUMLIN

Fanatic Crumlin fundraiser, Pat Cunningham, would like to say a massive thank you to the businesses and people of Cahir for supporting him again in his mad challenges. He has raised €1,600 approx - he still has a few places to call to yet and also has five sponsorship to collect.

The 1,000 mile challenge is getting closer and Pat can’t wait to give it a go. Pat once again thanks all who donated to his latest fundraiser. All funds raised go directly to the cancer ward in Crumlin.

WEDDING FAIR

Kilcoran Lodge Hotel will hold a mid-Summer afternoon wedding fair on Sunday July 28, 2013 from 3pm – 7pm.

THE BIG 1 MARKET

Last week, The Big 1 Market/car boot sale announced that they will sponsor Cahir Youth Club which provides a safe, fun environment for the youth of Cahir and surrounding areas where they can come and be active and socialise.

They run two nights a week, for youths aged 8 – 12 years on a Tuesday and Wednesday night and are located behind the VEC Centre on Church Street, Cahir.

The Big 1 have given the Club their own unit to give their youths a chance to raise funds to help keep the Centre open and gives them an opportunity to pop into their unit any Sunday to support the fantastic Club and volunteers are always needed.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT

The results of “25” Card Game that took place in the McAuley Room on Friday 19th July last was as follows; 1st with 11 games, Breda Ryan, Rena O’Connor. 2nd with 10 Games were Harry Tobin, Sheila Slattery.

On the Lucky Table, Teresa Prendergast, Leish Shine. Teddy Dillon, Lexie Sheehan. Raffle results; Red Burke, Kitty Slattery. The next Game will take place on Friday 26th July, 2013. ANIMAL WELFARE FUNDRAISER

Pat Crotty & Eileen McLoughlin would like to most sincerely thank all those who supported their recent cake sale.

Thanks to everyone who baked and bought cakes. A special thanks to Josephine & Maria for their generous donations. The total amount raised was €955.50 which was used to buy food and pay the veterinary bills of six different rescue groups. Thanks once again to all.

6 a Side Tournament; The 6 a side tournament is currently running in the Park with games most evenings from 7pm. 

Activity Mornings; Fitkids Activity Mornings for 4-10 year olds continue at the Park every Wednesday Morning from 10am.

SUIR DRAGON PADDLERS

The Suir Dragon Paddlers, a determined breast cancer survivor team will hold a Sponsored Paddle on 16th August, 2013 at 5.30pm in the Clonmel Rowing Club. All are welcome to come along and see them in action. It will be followed by a blessing of the boat and an official naming of the boat.
