Employers are being urged to familiarise themselves with the new JobPlus initiative which gives incentives to employers to hire people who are long term unemployed specifically targeting those who have been unemployed for longer than 12 months.

Commenting on the initiative, local Minister of State, Tom Hayes said it ‘is a simple, easily understood and attractive scheme of financial support for employers who recruit people who are experiencing such long term unemployment’.

Employers can access up to €10,000 for a qualifying recruit, paid monthly over a two year period with €10,000 available for those unemployed for longer than 24 months, with €7,500 for those unemployed between 12 and 24 months. There is no limit on the number of new recruits per employer. “While the unemployment rate is reducing gradually and last week it stood at 13.6%, it is still fundamentally important that the Government continues to find solutions for those people who struggle to find a job,” said Minister Hayes.
