Clonmel Fine Gael Cllr Joe Leahy has welcomed the recent announcement that cyclists will face on-the-spot fines next year.

While recognising that the majority of cyclists are responsible and safe road users, Cllr Leahy said he was pleased that such offences as cycling on a footpath or pedestrianised street or going through a red light will now be likely targets and could result in the issue of a fixed charge notice.

He hopes that the move will act as a deterrent to irresponsible cyclists.

“This announcement will promote safe cycling practices and make the streets and footpaths safer for everyone,” he said. “It will also free up Court and Garda time as cyclists will have the option of paying a fixed-charge penalty within 56 days instead of having to face prosecution in Court.”
