You’ve heard of Zumba for adults, well did you know that there is also an adapted version of Zumba for kids?

Previously known as Zumbatomic, the name has recently been changed to Zumba Junior for 4-7 years and Zumba Kids for 8-12 years.

The Zumba® Kids programme is the ultimate dance-fitness party for young Zumba fans, where they can play it loud and rock with friends to their own rules! This programme features age-appropriate music and moves that get kids moving to the beat. It’s all about feeling fearless on the dance floor, reinforcing the idea that it’s okay to just be yourself and dance like no one’s watching!

Kids learn different dance styles as well as new routines including the Brazilian Funk, Polynesian, Celtic Bluegrass, Jive, Axe, Jazz, African and Disco.

Not only are they exercising, getting fit, improving coordination with free movement, but also making friends for life. Not only does Zumba Kids concentrate on dance, but fun activities are incorporated into this busy class. e.g. fun games incorporating a range of equipment are enjoyed, at Kool School the addictive game Dodgeball is a major favourite!

Kids Zumba will be taking place in Kool School every Thursday in the new year: 4.15pm Zumba Junior age 4-7; and 5pm, Zumba Kids age 8-12. Both classes are €5, pay as you go.

The following are tips to get your children Zumba Kids active:

Get active yourself. Children learn through example and are five times more likely to be active if their parents are. If you’re attending Zumba Adults it can be a way to persuade kids who really want to be just like you.

Get a routine going! There are 1,440 minutes in a day so see where children can use at least 60 of them for activity. Remember you don’t have to do it all at once, even 10 minutes at a time counts.

Zumba Kids games help your children to develop basic skills such as throwing and catching. Get them to practice and show you the skills they learn. In Kool School, Zumba Kids participants have told us they participate in family Dodgeball, a game picked up in Zumba Kids! How much fun would that be? All you need is cones and two soft balls.

Encourage children to take part in after school activities. Remember most of their time in school is spent sitting at their desks. Some Schools in Tipperary are now doing Zumba Kids as part of their PE classes which is a great alternative to the norm.

Give the gift of activity. Buy gifts that encourage activity such as skipping ropes, hoola-hoops, balls etc. also available is Zumba Kids video games, for those winter days when weather is bad, get active indoors.
