A proposal to introduce traffic lights for Tivoli Bridge, beside the Slievenamon Road, was announced at last week’s meeting of Clonmel Borough Council.
Under the proposals, only cars from one direction will be able to cross the bridge at a time, similar to the design of Sir Thomas’s Bridge. Pedestrians will be able to use this bridge as normal.
The news has been welcomed by Cllr Siobhan Ambrose who said it was a long time coming.
“Historically, this bridge was never built to cater for such a large volume of traffic or pedestrians. The current situation means that pedestrians, often with buggies, have to cross this dangerous junction to get to their homes or into town so these new proposals will be like music to the ears of residents in this area,” she said.
“I see these proposals as an interim measure, ideally we hope that sometime in the future the Department will give the Council the necessary funding to widen this bridge. The proposals will firstly go out over the coming weeks for public consultation and by the time all the formal processes are complete and approved it is envisaged that the scheme will be up and running during 2014.”
