Clonmel plans to be part of an all-island initiative to plant one million trees in one day which takes place at the end of
the month.

The ‘One Million Trees in One Day’ is a charity, not-for-profit, cross-border, community and environmental initiative. The goal is to plant one million native Irish trees at various sites across both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland in one day. Why not join the many community and voluntary groups, landowners, families and tree-lovers that are coming together across all of Ireland to plant native Irish trees? Clonmel needs you!

And it is hoping to plant in excess of 6,000 trees on a two acre site at Greenan in the centre of town on Clonmel Borough Council land. This is being done to improve our environment, expand the urban forest network and encourage landowners to take a similar leap to plant more trees and hedges especially along the Suir River and its tributaries. Organisers are seeking shovel wielding volunteers to help the make this happen.

“We need many hands to make light work – so everyone in Clonmel and surrounds who would like to support this happening whether you are an individual, family, a group of friends, club or team, are called to sign up to come plant even one tree or a whole stand of trees. Spend a couple of hours out in a field, ploughed and ready for planting and contribute to your environment,” they said.

Just follow the green markers to the tree-planting site from Suir Island car park along Old Bridge and into Green Lane. Bring along appropriate footwear and a shovel (if you have one) and you will be met by other friendly volunteers.

This initiative is being pursued in Clonmel by SuirCan Community Forum in conjunction and with support from Clonmel Borough Council. It will take place from 12pm Friday 26 - 12pm Saturday 27 April.

Please contact Lyn Mather of SuirCan at 086 3856720 to let her know who you are, when you are available to come and for more information. You can also support this all-Ireland initiative by making a donation to the campaign at this website: www.onemilliontreesinoneday.com/donations.html or by texting “donate trees” to 57777. Text cost €3 plus standard messaging costs – part of which will go to the One Million Trees charity.
