Ireland South Labour MEP Phil Prendergast, from Clonmel, has welcomed the publication of the General Scheme of Transgender Recognition Bill 2013 by Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton TD.

Ms Prendergast said she has been working closely with the LGBT Intergroup in the European Parliament and is ‘absolutely delighted’ that Ireland is finally taking the first steps to recognising the transgender community.

“This step will enable us to recognise and fight for the rights of transgender people in Ireland, who are so often left on the margins. It is long past due and hopefully will bear Ireland into a new generation of equality and acceptance.

“I am extremely proud of the Labour Party today, for bringing Ireland into the future with a strong social rights Bill. We didn’t just talk about it, we actually did it.

“The reality is that gender is a complex issue and those seeking proper recognition of their gender have struggled with the national administration on many levels. Now, we can take one step closer to real equality.”
