If all of your energy is going away from you and nothing is coming back, you will not be happy. Balance is everything in life. This is so important.
You cannot do it all, you cannot have it all, at least not at the same time, so don’t kill yourself trying. Be gentle with yourself, notice what self talk you are giving yourself and If you are always giving and not giving back to yourself, there is and always will be something missing.
You must first look after you in order to be able to give back to others in your life. You don’t need anyone else to tell you that it’s ok to put yourself first, because it just is. Let’s twist this in favour of others and take the burden off you. If you are unhappy, you will be less likely to happily do other things for people. If you are happy, then you will have more heart, soul and energy to give to other things and people. To take care of you, you need to keep you whole and healthy. That doesn’t mean you disregard everything and everyone or be unkind, what it means is if you look after your health needs, physical needs, and emotional needs, you will be a much happier balanced person who can give more of themselves, instead of a burned out husk of a person who, after putting everyone and everything else first, has nothing left to give.
If you want to be happy, healthy and love what you’re doing and giving to the world, then like most decisions in our lives we must choose to do so. It begins with making a conscious decision to change what you are doing and choose differently.
Listen to your instinct
Listen to your needs, your desires, to what your heart is telling you. If you are out of balance, if you feel something isn’t right, if you know you are not giving yourself enough, if you know you want to lead a healthy life but don’t know why you haven’t started or can’t stick to it, this is your heart telling you you’re not going down the path it honestly wants or needs to.
Our bodies will often us how we feel, if we are off kilter or out of balance. A simple thing such as a headache can be telling us we are dehydrated but too often we just take a painkiller. So what do you do? How do you answer these feelings and questions? Listen, then act.
Find your purpose
I have spoken a lot in previous articles about finding out what we are meant to be doing with our lives or least following a path that makes us happy. Working out what our values and beliefs are and aligning them to a career path will bring us a lot of happiness in our work lives. Write down what you want for yourself. Whatever it is, write it down and once you have decided to do it you will feel better. No one said it will be easy but it beats the alternative.
Outline the path to your success
Write down the steps it will take, even if it requires a day by day analysis, to get to each desire you have. You can also call these goals. Don’t finish writing until you have thought about them all. You may even add an additional desire after thinking about it more. You need to be very specific and write down in detail what steps it will take to get you where you want, how you will feel once you get there and notice how you feel, who surrounds you etc.
Put yourself first
Stop living for other things and other people. Live for you. Don’t ever forget the power, strength and passion you have. Sometimes it’ll be buried by all the fog of the day to day, but don’t ever stop unburying or moving towards the path you know you must go down. It’s not selfish to put yourself first - it’s self-full. I know this sounds a bit out there but it’s the truth. We have been taught it’s selfish but we need to give up on that guilt and realise if we don’t put ourselves and our health first, we have nothing left to give back.
