Carrick-on-Suir Senator Denis Landy has said that a senior Labour party source confirmed that the government has committed not to reduce the old age pension.

And senator Landy has criticised ‘groundless media speculation’ that the government are planning to cut the pension in the forthcoming budget.

He said that the Labour party source told him that the matter is ‘not being contemplated by Government, and isn’t going to be and won’t be’.

Senator Landy says that he has been inundated with queries from elderly people calling into his constituency office and contacting him by phone seeking clarity on this issue.

“Elderly people are under enough pressure having to make choices between eating or heating at different times of the year without being subjected to further worry emanating from these baseless kite-flying statements. I am calling for political commentators to stop flying baseless political kites and desist from raising unnecessary worry and distress among the elderly and vulnerable in our society,” said Senator Landy.
