Clonmel senator Phil Prensergast is calling for better carer support, but hap praised the work of the European Parliament and fellow MEP Marian Harkin for their commitment to the community of carers in Ireland.
Speaking in the Parliament recently Ms Prendergast highlighted the importance of continued supports for carers.
“Carers are the forgotten workers, the people who look after their loved ones and sacrifice so much. They seek to create better value for money by using extremely limited resources effectively.
“They want to prioritise service quality and continuity for the most vulnerable in our societies and as a result they help to deliver strategic improvements in public policy.
“Carers in Ireland provide 3.7 million hours per week and are dependent on financial supports from fundraisers, including mini marathons where up to 40,000 women take part. Aside from that, carers also support a wide range of charities and local fundraising.
“Funding for carers should be valued, evaluated, costed and red-circled, with built-in reviews. Carers need a break, and they need their policy makers here in Europe and at home in government to protect and support them.”
