The screening of a poignant film documentary immortalising bachelor farmer life in the Comeraghs in the presence of the film’s producer, and a food and culture evening, entitled Comeraghlicious, are two new events added to the programme for Comeraghs Wild Festival which takes place from September 19-22.
The Brothers, a beautifully-filmed documentary set in the Comeraghs, takes an affectionate look at the lives of two elderly bachelors, Paddy and Nicholas Butler, who lived all their lives on an isolated farm.
The half-hour film is a touching portrayal of the Waterford and Ireland of yesterday and a lifestyle that has now almost completely disappeared. The Brothers shows the men’s life in the Comeraghs. There is a close bond between the two brothers, neither of whom would marry for fear of upsetting the other and their farmhouse décor remaining unchanged since they were small boys. The film culminates in the unexpected dramatic events which arose when one of the brothers died.
The film, which premiered in 2006, hasn’t been broadcast in seven years. Its producer, Irial MacMurchù of Nemeton TV, based in the An Rinn Gaeltacht, will introduce the film before its screening at a special event in The Workhouse, Kilmacthomas on Saturday, September 21. The screening of The Brothers as part of the Comeraghs Wild Festival programme of events reinforces the festival’s objective of showcasing the authenticity and unique sense of place of the Comeragh Mountains and its communities.
Coincidentally, The Brothers is beautifully shot by Richard Fitzgerald, a native of Kilmeaden, Co. Waterford, who is best known for his photographic books Vanishing Ireland with text by Edna O’Brien, and his recent book Ireland: The Parting Glass. Booking for this event is essential. Comeraghlicious! is the wholly appropriate name given to a casual dining event in Nude Food, Dungarvan on the opening night of Comeraghs Wild, which also coincides with National Culture Night. For just €10, diners can choose from a host of locally sourced foods washed down with a glass of Comeragh Challenger from Dungarvan Brewing Company. The fare includes: Comeragh Lamb; Veggie Bean Tagine with Ballinacourty vegetables; Nude Food Oatcakes; Little Milk Company Sliabh na mBan Cheddar and Beetroot Relish. Dessert is Cranachan, using Flahavan’s Oats and Deise honey. The event will include readings by Anne Farrell from her book Waterford Folk Tales and will conclude in time to join award-winning author, Claire Keegan, and poet Mark Roper for an evening of culture at Dungarvan Library.
Claire Keegan is renowned for her award-winning short stories and whose collections include Antarctica and Walk the Blue Fields. Mark Roper is an English-born poet and editor, based in Kilkenny, whose poetry collections include The Hen Ark, Catching the Light, The Home Fire, and Whereabouts.
Other artists participating in the Comeraghs Wild Festivalinclude: Irish storyteller Niall de Búrca; Young People’s Laureate for Wales Martin Daws, Welsh storyteller Fiona Collins and Wales-based teenage author Lucy Christopher. The strong Welsh link in the arts programme reflects the historic links between Wales and Waterford’s Copper Coast
