Theatre performance, directing and playwriting are the focus of a number of courses which will be run in The Source Arts Centre, by Fishamble: The New Play Company.

The Source has invited Fishamble to Thurles for a three-day theatre residency, aimed at new and developing writers, directors and producers.

The weekend comprises a directing workshop with Jim Culleton, artistic director of Fishamble; a two-day playwriting course with Gavin Kostick, literary manager at Fishamble; and a play development masterclass, again with Mr Kostick.

Suitable for beginners and experienced directors in professional and amateur work, the directing workshop is a hands on text-based, half day workshop in directing with Pat Kinevane’s Silent and Forgotten selected as the featured plays.

The playwriting workshop is a two-day course where participants will be immersed in a range of ideas and exercises designed to develop useful skills in writing for live performance including openings, the playwright’s imagination, plotting, alternative structures, characterisation, the rhythms of language and dialogue. This is suitable for beginners and experienced directors in professional and amateur work.

The masterclass is a one-to-one session on how to best develop your script towards production. It is aimed at emerging playwrights who have had at least one stage play produced.

There are a number of criteria involved: applicants must be resident in Munster; applicants must complete an application form and forward a script or excerpt from a script of no longer than 1,500 words to The Source Arts Centre; the submission must be a stage play for live performance only; applicants must be 18 years or over on April 12; applicants must have had at least one stage play produced – either professionally or locally.

Completed application forms and scripts (or excerpts) must reach The Source Arts Centre by Friday, February 14 at 5pm and successful applicants will be notified by Friday, February 28.
