Holders Clonmel Commercials powered their way through to the County MFC ‘A’ final with a comprehensive eleven points win over Newport Gaels at Holycross on Saturday and are poised to record their fourth successive title in the grade.

Their superior technique and greater range of attacking options were decisive and two goals at the start of the last quarter tipped the scales in their favour.

Early Gaels points by Jack Delahunty and Dan Carew suggested the possibility of an upset. Delanhunty saw a goal-bound effort cannon off a Commercials defender before Michael Nugent opened Commercials’ account from a free in the 7th minute. That settled Commercials and from there to the interval they began to dominate. Padraig White, Ross Peters, Kevin Fahey and Pauric Looram were key men for them as they reeled off six points over the next ten minutes to Newport’s sole reply from Jack Delahunty. Padraig White got three of the Clonmel points with Ross Peters, Kevin Fahey and Pauric Looram also scoring. Michael Nugent scored a goal for a 1-7 to 0-4 half time lead.

Peters and Nugent extended the lead before 1-1 from Liam Duffy left Gaels only four adrift but Commercials changed gears with goals from Michael Connolly and Pauric Looram wrapping it up for the Clonmel side.

Ross Peters was the best player on the field, covering acres of ground and was creative and incisive in all he did. Padraig White, Pauric Looram, Michael Nugent, Kevin Fahey and sub Jack Kennedy were others to shine in an eye-catching performance.
