Clanwilliam advanced to the quarter final of the Munster Junior Cup with a last gasp 13-10 win at Clanwilliam Park on Sunday. An exciting finish saw Brian Kissane kick a difficult penalty to win the game in the final play of the game.

Clanwilliam played with the strong breeze for the opening half and had the advantage for the early stages. Kilfeacle came more into the game, keeping the ball tight and making ground through the pack and a well drilled maul.

A break-out from defence saw Clanwilliam back on the front foot with a penalty coming their way after fifteen minutes which Brian Kissane kicked. Kilfeacle had the better of matters for most of the remainder of the half but an exceptional tight and disciplined defence from Clanwilliam meant that Kilfeacle were unable to convert their possession to scores. Clanwilliam were also very competitive at the breakdown making it difficult for Kilfeacle to progress from loose play.

Shortly after the re-start Gavin Hueston kicked a penalty for Kilfeacle to tie matters. Clanwilliam continued to compete for every ball but Kilfeacle were using the wind well with long and well placed kicks into Clanwilliam territory. Fifteen minutes into the half, Kilfeacle had a scrum close to the Clanwilliam line and were heading towards the goal line when an infringement brought a penalty try.

Things were looking good for Kilfeacle at this stage but Clanwilliam found another gear and started playing their best rugby. David McCormack and Kieran Merrigan were both beginning to make more ground with ball in hand as Clanwilliam were now playing the game in Kilfeacle territory. A strong Kilfeacle line-out was making it difficult for Clanwilliam to press home their advantage but two Clanwilliam substitutes played a big part in making the breakthrough. Eddie Ryan started winning clean line out ball and from one of these near the Kilfeacle line, Brendan Quinlan beat a couple of tacklers before offloading to Davie Kinehan who scored under the posts. The scores were now level with ten minutes remaining. Kilfeacle came back into the game but the Clanwilliam defence stayed organised. In the fourth and sixth minutes of injury time Kilfeacle had two unsuccessful penalty kicks at goal from just inside their own half. It looked like the excitement was over and extra time was looming. Then in the eighth minute of injury time Clanwilliam won a penalty which Brian Kissane struck sweetly to barely carry the forty metres over the posts. Clanwilliam have a busy end of season with Munster Junior Cup, Munster Challenge Shield and Mansergh Cup matches still to come.
