A brace from Dwayne Burns saw Clonmel Celtic close the gap at the top of the Premier League as they pushed bottom placed Two Mile Borris closer to the drop at Newhill Park, Littleton last Sunday.

Paul Shanahan, Dwayne Burns and Eddie Doyle had all gone close before Celtic deservedly hit the front after 19 minutes. A smart Graham Doyle pass released Dwayne Burns whose cross saw Kevin Waters nod home from 6 yards. Burns missed a great opportunity to put Celtic further ahead a minute later as the one-way traffic continued. After half an hour Borris had an effort charged down in the box and in the same attack Kieran Kendrick was forced to make his first save. This seemed to spark Borris into life and after 37 minutes Celtic’s Danny Madigan got back well to put pressure on Richard McCarthy, who fired over. Just as Borris thought they were entering the break just a goal behind and still in the game they conceded a second. A quick break released Paul Shanahan and his cross was converted at the far post by Dwayne Burns.

Celtic were quickly out of the blocks at the start of the second half and two further goals by the 50th minute wrapped up the three points. A minute into the second half a superb move involving Eddie Doyle and Stephen Ryan saw Dwayne Burns’ cross expertly flicked home by Paul Shanahan. In the 50th minute Dwayne Burns deflected Eddie Doyle’s shot into the net to make it 4-0. Although Celtic’s league chances still seem remote it was a useful workout before this weekend’s FAI Junior Cup clash with Kilkenny side Highview Athletic.

Clonmel Celtic move onto 19 points with 5 games left while Borris remain rock bottom on just 4 points, also with 5 games left.
