Another narrow defeat for Tipp Ladies Footballers

Lorraine O’Shea opened the Tipp scoring with a goal.

Michelle McGrath and Mairead Wall pointed for Waterford before Hannah Landers scored a goal for the home side. With Waterford now in the lead Tipperary turned to the Carroll sisters for the equaliser, with Claire and Edith pointing.

Tipp added points from Gillian O’Brien, Mairead Morrissey and Claire Carroll while Waterford’s Linda Wall and Michelle Ryan hit two points.

Waterford’s Michelle McGrath was sin binned in the 27th minute and Tipperary went in at the break with an extra player and a point lead, 1-5 to 1-4.

Lorraine O’Shea also open the second half with a point in the first minute.

Tipperary placed the extra person in the backs and reduced Waterford’s ability to score until in the 37th minute when Michelle McGrath resumed her position.

Waterford’s Linda Wall and Michelle Ryan scored the next two points to equalise for third time.

Mairead Morrissey pointed twice in two minutes while Waterford showed signs of the pressure when Michelle Ryan missed three frees in the following three minutes.

Claire Carroll reasserted the pressure with another point in the final minute of the third quarter.

Waterford steadied themselves again with a point from Linda Wall before Hannah Landers found the net for the second time.

This was the turning point of the game and despite another sin bin for Waterford, Tipperary could not close the gap.

Both teams hit another point before the final whistle blew with Waterford claiming the three points to put them at the top of the League table with nine points.

Tipperary are fourth on the National League Table heading into a free weekend but due to match postponements owing to bad weather, Armagh (second) and Leitrim (third) still have a game to play next weekend.

Tipperary introduced two more League debutants as an injured Aisling O’Connor made way for Lauren Fitzpatrick (Ardfinnan) in goal while Kirsty Downey (Cahir) lined out at corner-forward.
