The 25th anniversary of the Carrick Swan Minor Football team’s county championship title win was marked with a special tribute night to the team and mentors in Butlers Bar in the town.

It was a night of nostalgia for the team that earned a special place in the Swan GAA Club’s history when they clinched the 1987 county title by defeating Golden. The victory made them the first Swan minor team to win south and county titles.

Commemorative awards to mark the anniversary were presented to each member of the minor panel and team mentor by the awards sponsor Cllr Bobby Fitzgerald.

A poignant presentation was made to Ann O’Brien on behalf of her late son and team member Ger O’Brien, and Kenny Walsh accepted an award on behalf of the late Dan O’Meara, who was a team selector and great Swan man.

A crystal trophy was presented to 1987 Player of the Year Matty Waters by team manager Seamus Walsh. Matty said he was honoured with the special award and pointed out that he couldn’t have achieved it only for the people around him.

Swan Club PRO Sean McDonnell, who acted as Master of Ceremonies at the function, recounted the team’s journey to the county title.

He recalled that the defeated Cahir 1-08, 0-03 in Clonmel in May to win the South title and went on beat Killadangan in Cahir in the county semi-final. In the county final, the Swans defeated Golden by two points in Fethard. The final score was 1-08 to 1-06.

On behalf of the Club, he thanked sponsor Cllr Bobby Fitzgerald and the proprietors of Butler’s bar for their support of the event.

Vice Chair of the club Dick Lanigan congratulated all the members, who had brought great honour to the town saying it was always good for the club to look back and inspire the present team.

Cllr. Bobby Fitzgerald spoke of the great history of the Carrick Swan Club and how the great sporting spirit amongst the members remained an inspiring and driving force.

He also spoke of the positive impact of participation in sport and how the Carrick Swans were right up there with any other county team and of the huge dedication of the players and mentors and selectors over the years.

A great night’s entertainment and celebrations followed the awards ceremony with music and a buffet supper for all present.
