Jimmy Carr makes his international UEFA debut v England



There was disappointment for the Rep of Ireland Amateur team as the 2011 silver medallists failed to qualify for this summer’s UEFA Regions Cup Finals 2013 in Italy.

This mini-qualifying tournament that was staged in San Marino over the past week saw the Rep of Ireland going down 2-1 to England in their opening game last Wednesday. Irish skipper James ‘Chalky’ Walsh and Paul Breen were at the heart of the Irish defence. Jimmy Carr, who made his Irish debut in a friendly against Scotland in Tipp town last October, came on as a second half substitute to make his competitive debut, but could not make any difference to the scoreline.

Then last Friday the Rep of Ireland faced hosts San Marino that ended in a scoreless draw. International Player of the Year 2012 Adrian Walsh of Carrick United was between the posts with Paul Breen at the heart of the defence. Jimmy Carr came on in the second half to gain his third cap, but his introduction was unable to change the outcome.

The Rep of Ireland’s final Group game was against Northern Ireland last Sunday and although there was a 2-0 victory for the South, it was the North that progress to the finals proper in June. Jimmy Carr started the game to earn his 4th cap along with record-breaking skipper and FAI International Award winner in 2004 and 2011; James ‘Chalky’ Walsh, was making his 74th appearance in the green jersey and scored with one of his trademark headers. Paul Breen came on as a substitute making his 34th appearance.
