Aherlow Gaels, beaten by the same opposition in the West semi-final in August, turned the tables on Galtee Rovers in Sunday’s County Senior Football Championship quarter-final in Cahir to qualify for a semi-final date with JK Brackens.

The sides were level (0-3 each) after 13 minutes and they were still together at half time, 0-5 each.

Aherlow began the second half in determined mood and when Bernard O’Brien was fouled Thomas Fahy converted the penalty for their opening goal to put real daylight between the sides for the first time (1-7 to 0-5). Fahy was again accurate from the spot when Bernard O’Brien was fouled once more, 10 minutes from the end.

Both sets of backs were on top, with only eight points scored from play over the hour.

The Gaels had more penetration up front where Seamus Grogan,Cathal Dillon and Bernard O’Brien were outstanding, while Laurance Coskeran and Sean Cunningham covered acres over the hour.

Galtee Rovers depended largely on Denis Peters and Christopher Higgins in attack. Denis Peters troubled the Aherlow defence with his strong running, with Andrew Morrissey also making forays upfield. They must now prepare for a West Senior Football Final against Arravale Rovers.
