Galtee Rovers qualified for the Ballinalard Transport West senior football championship final when they overcame Aherlow Gaels with comparative ease at Sean Treacy Park on Saturday evening, winning 1-10 to 1-5
While Bernard O’Brien opened the scoring for Aherlow Gaels, it was Galtee Rovers with the advantage of the breeze, who had the better of affairs during the first quarter and led by 0-3 to 0-1 after seventeen minutes.
In the 20th minute Aherlow’s Sean Cunningham was impeded going through and Barry Grogan made no mistake with the penalty. However, as a result of an incident immediately after the score, Grogan was given a straight red card and Aherlow reduced to ten men. However, they fought hard during the remainder of the half, scoring two points to Galtee’s three, to leave the half-time score level at 1-3 to 0-6.
Even with the breeze in the second half, Aherlow Gaels found the shortage of a man too much and, while they enjoyed good possession they didn’t make good use of it. They had a point in the first minute but didn’t score again until the 30th.
Galtee got a great lift five minutes into the half when Denis Peters finished off to the Aherlow net, following a great run by Christopher Higgins and held on to win. In the last minute of the game their corner-forward, Tony Egan, was red-carded.
Andrew Morrissey, Denis Peters, Colin Morrissey, Shane Egan and Damien Burke were best the winners with Thomas Fahey, Bernard O’Brien, Laurence Coskeran and Mark Hanley best for Aherlow.
