Cashel Town A0 Clonmel Town A 2
Cashel Town’s first home game of the season ended in defeat to Clonmel Town on a warm afternoon at Palmershill.
The visitors were quickest out of the blocks and took an early lead when David McGrath converted a low cross after slack defending from the home team who failed to clear when they had the chance to.
There were many more chances in the first half, but almost all of them fell to a by now rampaging Clonmel team. Only a heroic performance by Cashel goalkeeper Philly Doherty kept the score to just one before the break.
Things didn’t get any better for Cashel Town after the break, and soon into the second period, Clonmel put this game beyond them. McGrath was the scorer once again, and his ability to finish looks like marking him out as a player to watch for many teams this season.
Once again there was an element of the home team being their own worst enemies when McGrath finished well from ten yards out after a ball was cut back from the end line.
Overall this was more of a competent performance than a brilliant one from Clonmel Town, but in fairness they were never really stretched or put under any kind of pressure.
As for Cashel Town , they simply haven’t been able to add to what was an already small squad during the off season, and if their first two performances of this new campaign are anything to go by, they could be in for a very long and difficult season ahead.
