The Munster Intermediate Cross Country Championships were held in very demanding conditions in Castlelyons where athletes had to contend with mud, wind and rain in large quantities.

Despite these very demanding conditions it was great to see the County represented in both races.

In the Ladies race Niamh Hennessy of Templemore ran a brilliant race, going out hard with the leading group and occupying 2nd place at one stage.

She went through a bad patch midway which saw her slip back a bit, but going out on the last lap she rallied again and kept the tempo going to finish a very creditable 6th on her debut in these Championships.

Angela McCann of Clonmel, more noted as a road athlete, adapted to the conditions very well and came through over the latter stages to finish a very creditable 8th.

Marie Fitzgibbon of Thurles Crokes also ran very well when finishing 16th with Catherine Rice of Clonmel running well to finish 27th.

These four athletes combined well for the County team but were edged out by Clare for the Bronze medals.

Anna Byrne of Clonmel also ran well for the County team when finishing 47th.

In the Men’s race we had William Maunsell going off with the early pace in a large group that soon was down to three going out on the second lap.

William was in the chasing pack and despite the demanding conditions kept the tempo going to finish 7th.

We also had good performances from Stuart Moloney of Moore Abbey Milers who ran very well when finishing 9th. Patrick Roche of Carrick on Suir also ran very well when finishing 10th.

Donal Keane of Dundrum ran very well in such conditions when finishing 15th with his club mate Kevin Moore finishing 19th. Mike Cunningham of Moore Abbey Milers also ran well when finishing 20th.

These six athletes all scored for the County team that won the inter County Silver medals.

We also saw good performances from Martin Keane (Dundrum) 21st, John Fitzgibbon (Thurles Crokes) 22nd, Tom Blackburn (Moore Abbey Milers) 24th and Ruaidhri Devitt (Dundrum) 29th.

It was great to see two Club teams for the County, Dundrum and Moore Abbey Milers field teams for this event with the Dundrum team of Donal, Kevin, Martin and Ruaidhri winning the Inter Club Bronze medals.

The Moore Abbey Milers team of Stuart, Mike, Tom and Damien finished 6th in the Inter Club event.
