Ballytarsna 0-4

The last game of the opening day of the finals was intriguing on a whole range of different levels. Boherlahan had emerged victorious by the most slender of margins when the sides met during the group stages. This final also pitted close neighbours and club mates against each other in a novel pairing. As a contest this game did not disappoint. Ballytarsna were first on the offensive and were only denied an early goal by the agility and bravery of Boherlahan goalkeeper Luke Kevin. Then Ryan O’ Sullivan, Ballytarsna and Cian Bargary, Boherlahan exchanged points to leave the sides level on 0-1 each at half time. The second half commenced at a frantic pace as both teams threw the proverbial kitchen sink at each other. Boherlahan were in ecstasy when Cian Bargary scored a fortuitous goal to push them in front. A point on the run by Kevin O’Connor, plus another by Mark Downey, edged Ballytarsna closer. As the game reached its final act, the tension was almost unbearable. The game was eventually decided with a goal worthy of any occasion when Boherlahan’s danger man Cian Bargary penetrated the Boherlahan defence before kicking the ball to the Ballytarsna net. It was a goal reminiscent of Nicky English’s kicked goal in the drawn Munster Final of 1987. The response from Ballytarsna was typical of any team trained by Fr. Peter Brennan. They were only denied goals by the brilliance of Boherlahan goalkeeper Luke Kevin. Luke’s heroics secured a historic title for Boherlahan. John Ryan, Boherlahan and Mark Downey, Ballytarsna are two players who look destined to wear the famous blue and gold jersey in years to come.
