Wilderness Rovers 3 – 1 St Nicholas
Relegation from the Premier League last season, left a burning desire in the Wilderness Rovers outfit to bounce back at the first attempt, and mission accomplished was achieved on Sunday last with another good performance against fellow promotion rivals St Nicholas.
That said, the Saints gave nothing easy to the home team, and apart from a few half chances early on, this was a very even game right up until a minute before half time, when Rovers opened the scoring through Ciaran Stapleton with a well taken effort from only twelve yards out. Stunned by the goal at the end of the first period, Nicholas’ concentration levels weren’t what they should have been coming out for the second, and they were punished again only two minutes into the half when Lee Cashman scored a wonder goal from a twenty five yard free kick.
Eight minutes later, the game was effectively ended when the home team brought Youceff Brahimi on as a substitute and 15 seconds later he scored with his first touch of the game. After that, the home side went into their shell to protect the three points, and invited the Saints unto them, which led to a goal by Philip O’Doherty with 20 minutes left. But this was no more than a consolation.
Galbally United 1 – 2 Rosegreen Rangers
Rosegreen kept their tenuous promotion prospects alive at Galbally on Sunday with a hard fought but deserved win against Galbally. The home team started well and took the lead after 25 minutes with a bullet of an effort from Jimmy Barry Murphy. Alas they were unable to take this lead to the half time break, when right at the end of the half, Rosegreen were awarded a free kick and Vinnie Downey rose highest to head home. The second half was a tight affair and twice Galbally thought they had restored their lead through evergreen Quinn Perry, but twice they were ruled offside. The game looked like it was going to end in a draw, but ten minutes before the end, the visitors stole all three points, when Daniel Hayde ghosted into the area, and fired home to keep his team in the promotion hunt.
