South champions Carrick Swans were overpowered by a slick Eire Og Nenagh in a one-sided Clean Ireland countyMHC ‘A’ semi-final at Semple Stadium last week.

The concession of four first half goals left Swans with a mountain to climb in the second half, and while they battled gamely, they game was beyond them at the interval when they trailed 4-11 to 0-8.

Swans looked as though they were about to create an upset as they ran into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead after eight minutes.

Dean Walsh led the way for them with three points while Jack Cooke added two more, but once Eire Og settled with points from Donncha Quinn, Killian Gleeson and Gary Howard, after Philip Hickey’s initial effort, the Nenagh challenge went from strength to strength.

Philip Hickey started the goal-rush in the 11th minute; Gary Howard had a second in the 20th minute, and Philip Hickey wriggled past a couple of tackles to score a third in the 24th minute for a 3-9 to 0-7 lead.

On the stroke of half-time Killian Gleeson scored a fourth for a 4-11 to 0-8 lead, and there was now no way back for Swans.

Points by Jack Cooke and Luke Gahan at the start of the second half reflected their resolve, and Dean Walsh might have had a goal for them in the 37th minute.

Jack Cooke pointed when Walsh’s free was stopped but that was as good as it got for the Carrick lads as Nenagh went on to win comfortably.
