Moyglass United 1 – 4 Clonmel Town
Clonmel Town had to come from behind in this tie as Moyglass United held out hopes of springing what would have been a massive surprise in Sunday’s FAI Cup tie.
After a bright start when both teams had a number of half chances, Moyglass shocked Town by opening the score on the half hour mark, a delicate pass by Diarmuid Buckley setting Kieran O’Connor to drive to the Clonmel teams net. The home side held this lead until the break and could have added to it early in the second period but for a combination of good defending and profligacy in front of the away side’s goal.
They were made pay for this in the 55th minute when John Shanahan was quickest to react to some sloppy defending by Moyglass United to poke home a corner.
Things could have gone from bad to worse immediately for Moyglass, when Town were awarded a penalty shortly after, but Niall Murphy saved brilliantly from veteran Tony Scully.
However, the resistance finally broke on the home side, when Evan Mc Grath scored from an acute angle, as Moyglass began to tire on the heavy pitch. The visitors made it 3-1 eight minutes from the end when Shanahan got his second from a corner in a replica of his opening goal, and Scully made up for the penalty miss two minutes from time, to send Clonmel Town through to the open draw round.
