Golf clubs back in action after the storms

Cahir Golf Club captain Noel Hally assesses the damage at Cahir Park Golf Club after last week's storms. One of the oldest trees on the course, located between the first green and the second tee box, was a victim of the raging storms.
CAHIR PARK

CAHIR PARK

Last week we were battered by the fierce storms accompanied by monsoon like rain. A trail of destruction was left on the Golf Course as a result with numerous trees down. One half of our course now looks more like a giant lake with small green islands scattered throughout rather than a Golf Course, while the other side is strewn with fallen trees and all sort of debris. It is particularly sad to see some of the huge trees, which were maybe 150-200 years old flattened and about to be cut up and disposed of.

The clean-up which is going to take some time and a lot of effort has already started and will continue until finished. The fallen trees will be replaced by young healthy trees, the water will flow back into the river, the days will get longer and warmer, the golfers will appear in their droves and all the bad stuff will be forgotten.

We are very fortunate here in Cahir Park that at least we have 10 holes on exceptionally well drained soil so that no matter how much rainfall, given a few hours and it is playable again.

LADIES

The storm that ripped through Ireland over the past week, wreaked havoc everywhere. The hurricane force winds caused major damage to a lot of the local golf courses, many losing trees that were hundreds of years old and signature features to many holes.

It was decided by the course committee at Cahir Park Golf Club to close the Golf Course until repairs have been made and it is safe again to play.

Reviewing the situation

The Committee will meet again on Wednesday afternoon to review the situation at that stage. Another notice will issue to members then. Check your email for any updates.

Well done Greenkeepers

Once again the weather was devastating this week and restricted the use of the clubhouse and course which inevitably affected income from both the bar competitions. Those of you who managed to get out and play will no doubt have witnessed the number of felled and damaged trees around the course thankfully no damage to greens or fairways.

A big thanks to the greenkeeping staff who braved the elements and managed to clear up the debris. Weather wise, things can’t get any worse so let’s hope March will bring good tidings.

BALLYKISTEEN

Last Sunday we witnessed the first official duty for the incoming Captains for 2014 with the occasion of our Mens Captain Thady Greene and Lady Captain Esther Fearnley’s Drive In.

A large crowd gathered for the proceedings which included the red carpet treatment from Ballykisteen Hotel for both Captains upon their arrival. Both Captains were very well turned out in their Club colours and mingled among the crowd who enjoyed tea and scones in the Junction One bar before the big event.

Willie Hartnett, Tony Browne and Alan Dunphy carried out the draw for the 3 person scramble with great efficiency with a total of 31 teams taking part. Just after 12.15, Thady and Esther made their way to the 10th tee box for the eagerly awaited Drive In and Thady set the tone by hitting a super drive down the middle of the fairway followed by a huge cheer from the onlooking crowd. Following a bit of hush, Esther calmly proceeded to hit an terriffic drive down the middle of the fairway to formally announce their arrival in office and the start of a new golfing season at Ballykisteen. Finally, it was Junior Captain Ben Downey to ‘hit-off’ from the 10th tee box and he followed the senior captains with a super drive down the middle of the fairway to close the formalities.

Everyone then departed for their respective tee boxes for the 9 hole scramble in perfect conditions. Afterwards, all assembled in the Ballyk bar for finger food, drinks and for the presentation of prizes, all at Ballykisteen Golf Club wish Esther and Thady unqualified success for the year ahead.

The winning team in the scramble were Dan O’Donnell, Hughie Walsh and Iestyn Winn, with Keith Hoare, Norrie Greene and Bertie Quirke in 2nd place and Sarah Toomey, Richard Keays and Evan McGrath in 3rd.
