Looking after the development of young golfers has always been a priority of Clonmel Golf Club, but this year the club has taken on an extra new initiative.

To promote the sport and to open it up to boys and girls from the age of six to 16, the club is running golf lessons each Saturday morning from 10.30 to 12.30. Since the first Saturday morning on 18th January to date, and despite the spoilsport attempts of the weather, the programme is proving a great success. The plan is that it will continue for another few Saturdays to enable more to come along and sample the fun and facilities.

coaching from pga club professional

Club PGA Professional Robert Hayes, with a lifetime’s experience to draw on, takes the groups under his wings, demonstrating the basics of driving, pitching, chipping and putting. The club now with a dedicated practice range can provide a safe area where young golfers can learn how to hit a golf ball, and enjoy the fun and satisfaction that goes with with.

For the 2014 season the new Junior Boys Convener is Shane Lawlor and the new Junior Girls Convener is Deirdre Ronan.

Thus far Shane is very happy with the take-up amongst the juniors but is hoping many more will come along and experience the sport of golf.

Shane explained: “We distributed over 500 leaflets to all the primary schools in the town, St. Oliver’s, St. Mary’s, Ss. Peter & Paul’s and Powerstown, and also in the High School to First and Second Years.

“Under the guidance of Club PGA Professional, Robert Hayes, our budding golfers are learning new skills and developing very steadily. This has been made possible due to the practice area, putting green and chipping green available for use in the club.

“The social benefits that the juniors experience is evident too. The sense of friendship, fun and enjoyment being had by all involved, is heartwarming to say the least.

“We would like to extend a big thank you to all those who are working tirelessly every Saturday morning to help out and also the parents who give up their time willingly,” said Shane.

GOLF CLUBS CAN BE PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE

Shane also stressed that the lessons were only €2 per Saturday morning and that all golf clubs can be provided (free of charge). So therefore there is no need just yet for parents to add further expense. “This way it gives the kids a chance to sample the sport without having to pay membership or buy clubs, it gives them the chance to try it out without any real expense.”

Before concluding Shane acknowledged the great work done for junior golf at Clonmel over the past number of years, mentioning in particular the efforts of Richie Power, John Bolger and T.J. Corby.

great plans for the
summer ahead

Chief organiser of the girls coaching for 2014 is Deirdre Ronan who is full of enthusiasm in her role of Girls Junior Convener for the year ahead.

Updating on the progress of the girls, Deirdre said that the “junior girls are enjoying getting back to the golf course. They have been attending group coaching sessions with our club professional for the past few weeks and getting ready for the season ahead.

“We will continue to hold sessions during the school holidays and are also hoping to have some fun days over the summer where we will organise competitions with girls from neighbouring clubs.

“At present our girls are ranging in age from 11 to 15 and are all very enthusiastic, following in the footsteps of Michelle and Gemma McCarthy who have represented Clonmel Golf Club and their school at Munster and National level.

“Our lady members have also had great success in their team events of late getting to the Miele All-Ireland finals and also getting to the All-Ireland Mixed Foursomes semi-finals in the past two years, we would like to see that success continuing and are encouraging all our junior players, as they will be our teams of the future.

“If you or any of your family or friends are interested in joining us please contact Aine at 052-6124040.”

Lady Captain for 2014 at Clonmel Golf Club, Deirdre
Daly, is also very enthusiatic about the development of youth golf at Lyreanearla.

“As Lady Captain of Clonmel Golf Golf I am delighted to endorse our programme for Junior girls at Clonmel Golf Club. Clonmel Golf Club is very fortunate to have a very capable Junior Convener in Deirdre Ronan. Deirdre has a great team behind her and they are unstinting in their commitment in promoting junior golf.

“Junior golfers are the life blood and the future of our club and with ongoing coaching and development who knows we may produce the next Michelle Wie!

“We have a Saturday morning programme running for the next couple of weeks at our club and for €2 they will receive coaching from our club professional Mr. Bob Hayes. So parents if you think you have a budding golfer in your midst please bring them along at 11.30 a.m. for one hour”.
