Club members in Mallorca before competing in an event.
Clonmel Triathlon Club's annual general meeting, awards presentation and end-of-year party night takes place in the Brewery Bar of Mulcahy's in Clonmel this Saturday night.
The AGM kicks off at 7pm and the awards ceremony takes place around 9pm. The club's members will finish the night at the SuperSoul Machine gig in Mulcahy's.
Eighteen members of the club competed in the Challenge Paguerra on the island of Mallorca on October 14. More than 30 family and friends travelled to support them in the race that consisted of a 1.9 kms swim, 90 kms cycle and half marathon.
This was the first middle distance triathlon for 12 of the competing Clonmel Triathlon Club athletes.
"These people put in some serious training, early morning starts, open water swim sessions, hilly cycles and runs straight off the bike to get themselves ready for this adventure," said club spokesperson John Falvey.
The first leg of the triathlon, the 1.9 kms swim, took place in crystal clear waters that were ideal conditions for the competitors. Temperatures were starting to rise to 26 degrees Celsius as they got on the bikes to start the 90 kms cycle that included more than 1000 metres of climbing,
"We cycled through fantastic scenery, which made the pain in the legs easier. After that we only had a small thing of a half marathon to run! By now temperatures were hitting 30 degrees," John said.
"This is where the supporters did their job. The course was looped and they positioned themselves in the perfect spot to cheer us on every time we passed them, which helped a lot. All the triathletes finished in spectacular fashion and it was great to see."
Anyone interested in trying out the sport of triathlon is welcome to attend the AGM on Saturday night.
