The Irish Heart Foundation’s Big Heart Walks celebrating World Heart Day, is the BIGGEST countrywide walking event of the year with more than 10,000 people of all ages expected to take part.

This September as part of Irish Heart Month, the people of Tipperary are invited to join in a 6km walk in Cloughjordan organised by local big hearted supporter Helen Deane to get their hearts pumping on Sunday 30 September.

The national charity fighting heart disease and stroke is urging families, communities and groups to organise or take part in a 5k Big Heart Walk where they liveand raise €1 for every kilometre walked to help turn 50,000km into €50,000.

Aideen Lynch, Irish Heart Foundation Big Heart Walks co-ordinator said: “September is a great time of the year to kick-start you and your family into physical activity. At the Irish Heart Foundation, we know that many adults and families struggle to fit exercise into their week. But the great thing about walking is that anyone can do it, adults only need 30 minutes a day at a brisk pace and it’s free! Our Big Heart Walks make a great day out for all ages and we couldn’t do it without the great support of local organisers like Helen. So if you’re looking for fun, fresh air and plenty of craic, why not join the Tipperary walk on Sunday, 30 September. You can do your bit to help us turn 50,000 kilometres into €50,000 – just raise €1 for every kilometre you walk!”

And the charity’s Big Heart Walks are backed by Ireland’s favourite soap stars from Fair City. Fair City actor Bryan Murray from Dublin said: “The Irish Heart Foundation has the right idea about walking – it’s one of my favourite things to do. You can’t beat that invigorating feeling - breathing in fresh air, feeling your muscles working and enjoying time to think or have a decent conversation. Walking by the sea is a particular favourite of mine and that’s what I plan to do on 30 September... with the wind in my face and comfortable walking shoes on my feet, strutting my stuff.”

Being physically active at a moderate intensity for 30 minutes, five days a week was also part of the lifestyle advice issued by the Irish Heart Foundation to launch the September Heart Month campaign to lower blood pressure which is a serious risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The charity continues to roll out free blood pressure checks nationwide so keep an eye out for Irish Heart Foundation nurses in a big red van!
