Walking and Cycling Club hoping to start in Carrick

South Tipperary County Council, in November 2012, appointed Kieran Boyle of Kieran Boyle Consulting, a specialist Transport Planning and Engineering Design Company, to devise a strategy for the County Council and the towns of Carrick on Suir, Clonmel, Tipperary, Cashel and Cahir to promote walking and cycling.

‘The Active Travel Walking and Cycling Strategy’ outlines the plan of the County Council and the five towns to promote walking and cycling; to improve existing walking and cycling infrastructure; extend it where necessary and to promote behavioural change in the public living in South Tipperary and the five towns.

Carrick on Suir being the hometown of the legendary world No. 1 cyclist Sean Kelly is the obvious area to become involved in this strategy and the manager at the centre named in his honour - Yvonne Power - is trying to create interest in starting a Cycling and Walking Club at the Sean Kelly Sports Centre.

The Centre is at present being used as a meeting place by various groups of cyclists, runners and walkers, and anyone interested should contact Yvonne.

Carrick on Suir Town Council is currently improving the existing cycling lanes and funding is available for that purpose under the Smarter Travel Policy. The Council is planning to unveil the Active Travel Town Walking and Cycling Strategy soon and devise a plan, which can be referred to if funding becomes available.

The Plan will be available for inspection by the public and submissions will be invited.

The Pill Road area on the very busy N24 where at present the two secondary schools are situated and a third school in the near future needs careful planning, and a School Travel Plan Measure would need to be put in place.
