Walking festival will take in beauty of Comeragh Mountains and Nire Valley

Walking enthusiasts and all lovers of the outdoors can enjoy the beauty of the Comeragh Mountains and Nire Valley on October 8th and 9th at the 23rd annual Comeragh Mountains Autumn Walking Festival.

Organised by Nire Valley Failte Group, the event is certain to attract participants from far and wide to one of the most beautiful locations in Ireland.

It was started to prolong the tourist season and the organisers haven't lookedback since.

There will be three walks each day and transport will be provided as required, to and from the start.

All walks will register at Ballymacarbry Community Centre.

The schedule is -

Saturday 8th :

B+ Walk: Coumaraglin/Seefin/Coumfea Lakes.

Registration: 08.00 to 08.30

Bus to the Mar-Mar road, taking in a climb of Coumaraglin Mountain and onto Seefin, then crossing the Monavullagh Mountain Range and arrive at Coumfea Lakes, then crossing Nire River to arrive back at Nire carpark.

This walk will be approximately 6 hours duration and a high level of fitness and ability is required. Distance is 16km.

B Walk: Tour of the Lakes.

Registration: 08.30 to 09.00.

Bus to Nire Lay-by.

Starting at the Nire Layby, the walk will cross the Nire river and climb to the Sgilloge Loughs. It continues around the base of Curraghduff to the Coumalochas and then rise to Coumfea at 520m. It then descends towards Lyre and crosses the Nire river at the trailer bridge finishing at the Nire Layby.

This walk will be approximately 5 hours duration and a very good level of fitness and ability is required. Distance is 11km.

C Walk: The Gap & Sguilloge Lakes

Registration: 09.30 to 10.00

Bus to the Nire Carpark.

Walk 7km from Nire Carpark to the Gap taking in the Sguilloges and back to the carpark. Approximately 4-5 hours duration. A good level of fitness is required for this walk.

Sunday 9th

B+ WALK: Old Bridge to Ballymacarbry

Registration: 08.30 to 09.00

Bus to Clonmel. Walk 16km from The Old Bridge, Clonmel to Ballymacarbry following The Munster Way. Ascent 420m. 5-6 hrs, a high level of fitness and ability is required.

B WALK: Sguilloge Lakes/Coumlara Plateu/The Gap.

Registration: 09.00 to 09.30

Bus to Nire Carpark taking in the Sguilloge lakes and then a gentle climb to Coumlara Plateu and onto Carrignagower, then descend to the Gap and follow Boreen an Socraid to arrive back at Nire carpark.

This walk will be approximately 4.5 hours in duration and a high level of fitness and ability is required. Distance is 12km.

C WALK: Archaeological Sites / Local History Walk.

Registration: 09.30 to 10.00

Bus to Nire Road. Taking in the old village areas of Kilkeaney, Castlerea, Bennets Church, The Copper Mines & Local Grotto, walking back to the Community Centre.

Walk 9km. Duration 4-5 hours.

Ballybrien Loop Family Walk - Registration: 11.30 to 12.00

Circuit of Ballymacarbry, Ballybrien and back to the Community Centre. Approximately 2 hours. Children welcome, a walk on country lanes and forest roadways.
