The Newcastle Pattern Festival was a very popular event for many years and attracted people in their droves, young and not so young. While the Pattern Festival no longer exists it has been replaced in recent years by the Newcastle Vintage Festival.

Our main picture this week features many well-known farming folk of the time.

The Clonmel & District
Canine Show also features this week and is still as popular as ever today.

Sticking with matters
canine, we ran a story in August of 1993 on a Ballinure based dog called ‘Bisto,’ owned by Peter and Valerie Magill.

‘Bisto’ at the time of the story was 23 years of age or an incredible 161 years of age in human terms, and was one of the oldest dogs in Europe, perhaps the oldest.

His owner joked that sturdy little ‘Bisto’, a Jack Russell, was made up of so many varieties that he could have been called Heinz (57 varieties).
