Historic Photo of Skeheenarinky Emigrant

An amazing photo has found its way to Skeheenarinky in recent days. Penelope FitzGerald, a niece of Garret FitzGerald, was visiting her old ancestral home at Attycran. Before leaving, she presented Karol DeFalco with an 1892 photograph of Garret’s grandfather, Patrick Fitzgerald. The photo of this Skeheenarinky emigrant shows some of his children - including his youngest, Desmond FitzGerald, who was Garret’s father. Pat Fitzgerald emigrated just after the local school and teacher’s house were built in 1858. When he married in England some years later he gave his occupation as ‘stone mason’. It is conjecture - but certainly very possible - that he honed his masonry skills in the construction of those Skeheenarinky buildings.

The dates for the Skeheenarinky School Gala Weekend 2012 have been decided - 15th, 16th and 17th June. The weekend begins on Friday morning, 15 June, with a Coffee Morning at ‘Galty Cottage’ the old teachers-house beside the school. It is hoped to have a card-game on the Friday night at Jacksons. Saturday plans have not yet been finalised but will appear here and elsewhere in due course. Sunday 17 June is the Gala Day which is one of the highlights of the children’s year and an important day in the fund-raising activities of the School Parents’ Association.

Alzheimer Society Coffee Morning

Billy & Catherine Crotty are holding a coffee morning for the Alzheimer Society on Saturday May 19 from 11am to 2pm. Last year was a great success and everyone’s support would be appreciated for this worthy cause.

Lough Rescue

Concern was raised for the safety of a three week old orphan lamb at Skeheenarinky lough recently and it was thought the lamb would come to an untimely end either in the lough or from hunger. Then John Fox came to the rescue and in what has been described by one local lady as a ‘heroic rescue’ the lamb was brought to safety and returned to its owner. Well done, John!

Eugene Crotty Cup

The Eugene Crotty Memorial cup was contested between the under 12 hurling players of Skeheenarinky and Ballygiblin last Sunday in Ballyporeen. The match was a great success with Skeheenarinky winning in the end. The cup was proudly presented by Mrs. Bridgie Crotty to winning captain, Kieran Macken. Great credit is due to both teams and their mentors. It was a nice display of hurling in what was a fitting memorial event for Eugene.
