Peaks Mountaineering Club
All the structures for the coming season are now in place, with the AGM concluded and the top table elected. Jim O’Flaherty is the new chairman and the new committee will be listed next week.
This time of year is a busy time for the club, with membership due and the meets lists being prepared for the next few months. Niamh Barrett is leading an away walk in Kerry on this Sunday, 30th. All the details are on the notice board in Eldon’s.
Another away trip is planned for the Mournes on the October Bank Holiday weekend and the leader is Tom Dalton. This is a very pleasant weekend with a number of walks planned and if you want a bit of shopping in Belfast you can fit it in also. The motorway makes it a very accessible location but accommodation must be booked in advance. Get your name on the list as soon as possible as the Mournes walks are a big favourite.
Kevin Bowen led the recent walk and he did the classic route in the Knockmealdowns, covering 21 kilometres of mountain peaks, colls and valleys with a height gain of 1,550 metres.
The walk on this Sunday, 30th September is in the Galtees, with Michael Greene leading the 10am walk, assited by Niall Quinlivan. The Galtees can be very unpredictable, with rapid weather changes, so pack all the gear. With a hot drink and a bite to eat, and Ordnance Survey map no. 74, you are set up for the day. All walks leave from Eldon’s with a pick-up at Morrison’s Garage for the Cahir-based members.
More club information is available on the website at www.peaksmcclonmel.ie or call PRO Bernard Lennon on 086-2937220.

Grow It Yourself meeting
The next meeting of Grow It Yourself (GIY) Clonmel will be held on this Thursday, 27th September at 7pm in Clonmel Library. The guest speaker, Nuala Madigan from the Irish Peat Company, will talk on Wildlife and Compost in your garden - why bother with them? All are welcome and meetings are free of charge.
At the first meeting back after the summer break the opening speech People I Love to Hate was given by Ann O’Sullivan and boy did she cut a few celebrities down to size. That speech must have been building up over the summer or ever longer! The enthusiasm of her audience was so palpable there was a sense they wanted to add a few names of their own. Mick White followed with his speech on the Rolling Stones album Let it Bleed, with some music included. The third speaker slot was filled by a DVD of a previous speech competition. George and Richard did evaluations while Jim was general evaluator, with Irene as toastmaster. Thanks also to Breda (topics master), Alan (timer) and Peter (grammarian).
The next meeting provides the opportunity to come and have a laugh at the humorous speech competition on this Thursday, 27th September in the Clonmel Park Hotel at 8pm. Non-members are free to join the fun. For further information contact Mick White at 086-4038587 or visit online at www.clonmeltoastmasters.toastmastersclubs.org
