The Clonmel Allotments and Community Gardens Association held their Annual General Meeting in Hearn’s Hotel on January 22 and it was a very well attended meeting.

Chairman Billy O’Donoghue welcomed everyone to the meeting and got the business of the night underway. Plot holders paid their membership fees and Borough Council lease agreements and Ger McEvoy kept records.

Secretary Bernard Lennon gave an overview of the past year’s activities which were highlighted by the visit of the Entente Florale international judges in August. This focused the committee on presentation of the allotments and gave many ideas for future development.

The election of committee for the year was undertaken and Billy O’Donoghue was elected Chairman with Bernard Lennon as Secretary. Ger McEvoy, Mieke Muyllaert, Ruairi O Caisleain are the treasurers. The committee members are Joan Hanton, Joe Burke, Michael O’Brien, Eileen Kelly and Michael O’Donoghue.

Chairman Billy O’Donoghue encouraged all the members to participate actively in the maintenance of the pathways and plots as it is everyone’s responsibility to maintain the section of pathway at their plot. The importance of weed control is critical as weeds which go to seed will propagate in all the neighbouring plots which are very suitable due to freshly dug soil.

Numbering of all plots will be carried out as only the original plots are numbered at present and it can be a little confusing to new plot holders. Every plot holder is requested to bag their waste and keep on their plot until we have the free skip early in April.

The composting compound is full presently and another will be constructed later after all the waste is removed.

The committee paid tribute to our founding members Michael and Fiona who have taken up other activities and wish them success and good luck. Ellen Wisniewski our very active founder secretary returned to her native U.S.A early this year and we wish Ellen every good fortune and hope that when she comes back to visit Clonmel with Frank she will pay us a call.

We will shortly be reallocating the plots which have not been renewed and if any of last year’s plot holders have forgotten to renew their lease please contact Bernard on mobile no 0862937220 immediately. The end of this month is the closing off date for renewal and we ask you to bring this to the attention of all members.
