Under the Aistear programme the children are encouraged to think and ask questions about the world around them and, in partnership with an adult, to experiment in the environment and use new skills to manipulate objects and materials. The carers at the playgroup noticed the popularity of play building and so invited in two ‘real life’ builders to speak to the children about their job. Dec and Ger brought in their tools like drills, screwdrivers, spirit levels and saws and explained the safety precautions needed when using them.

They showed the children the protective clothing that needs to be worn when operating them like goggles, hard hats, high visibility jackets and ear muffs. As well as learning a lot the children loved the experience and were talking about it for days afterwards!
