Carrick-on-Suir’s Golden Years Discount Wednesdays for Over-65s scheme is attracting bus loads of retired visitors to the town, according to local business leaders.

Carrick-on-Suir Business Association has declined to comment on the recent RTE Local Heroes show featuring the retail discount scheme that was criticised by local councillors for portraying a negative image of the town and the tourism initiative.

But it reports that contrary to the impression given by the show filmed before Easter, the discount Wednesdays are proving to be a success. Seamus Campbell of COSBA says many local retired people are shopping in the town on Wednesdays and retirement groups from Waterford, Kilkenny and Carlow are booked to visit in coming weeks.

A bus load of Tramore Active Retirement Group members visited Carrick on June 19 and were full of praise for the town, he says. “The great food, shopping and free guided tour of Ormond Castle were highlights and they promised to return with family members. Some were so impressed they returned to shop in the town a few days later.”
