The death of Clonmel-born priest Fr. Pat Cooney, which occured at the end of May, continues to leave a void in the parish of St. Joseph and St. Benildus, Newtown and St. Mary’s in Ballygunner, 
Waterford.

The death of Clonmel-born priest Fr. Pat Cooney, which occured at the end of May, continues to leave a void in the parish of St. Joseph and St. Benildus, Newtown and St. Mary’s in Ballygunner, 
Waterford.

He had served as parish priest in Ballygunner for much of the past five years.

Formerly of Davis Terrace, Clonmel, he was son of the late Pat and Catherine Cooney (nee Denmead). He was educated at Clonmel High School and after studying for the priesthood at St. John’s College in Waterford he was ordained on June 12 1965. At his funeral Mass Bishop Lee said that Fr. Pat touched the lives of many through his dedication and care. He said he was a pleasant, happy, good humoured man, who would be missed for his dedication, as well as his huge contribution to education. He was laid to rest in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Clonmel.
