President Mary McAleese is to visit Ballymacarbry next month in what could be her last official function in this part of the country

She will open Ballymacarbry Elders Housing Association’s new estate called Cluain Cairbre on Monday, September 12.

She will arrive in Ballymacarbry around 10.30am on September 12 for the opening ceremony for the 15 unit housing scheme for the over 55 situated in the heart of the village.

The President will unveil a monument at the entrance to the estate and meet the residents during her visit. She is scheduled to leave the village by midday.

Local Fianna Fail county councillor Michael J. O’Ryan says the President’s visit is great news for the people of Ballymacarbry, who have put a lot of work into getting the new housing estate completed.

“President McAleese has been a wonderful ambassador and lived up to her mantra of “Building Bridges” along the way. She has travelled the high roads and byroads of Ireland and unveiling such a necessary amenity in such a proud community will be right up her street,” he declared.
