SOLOGHEAD GAA CLUB
On Thursday afternoon, July 26, a number of past and present members of Sologhead GAA Club along with close friends paid a special visit to the Deerpark Nursing home Shronell, Lattin to meet a former Club stalwart and life long member, Bill Stapleton.
The Stapleton family have a long association with the GAA and Sologhead Club and ‘Billa,’ as he is affectionately known, played for Sologhead for many years winning West Junior Hurling Championships in 1949 and 1955 and also served as manager, trainer and selector on Sologheads County Junior Hurling winning team of 1959.
Presently Life President of Sologhead GAA Club, Bill was also active at administrative level and served as Club Chairman in the 1950s, 60s and 70s and did great work for the club following on from his father Jack who was very prominent in building up Sologhead GAA Club in the 1920s through to the 1940s and likewise during the formative years in the setting up of the West Senior Board.
Club Vice Chairman, Seanie Riordan, was lavish in his praise of ‘Billa’ on his contribution over many years to the Sologhead Club and also to the many players of yesteryears who turned up to pay tribute to Bill, to Oliver Coffey on his work behind the scenes in making the day possible and to the hospitality displayed by the Deerpark Nursing Home.
This year Tipperary completed the Munster Minor Hurling and Football Final double and one of those former players here to pay tribute to ‘Billa’ was Jimmy Ryan (Rookie) who was goalkeeper on both teams when Tipp last brought off the Minor double in 1955.
On hand to make a presentation to Bill was current Tipperary Senior Hurling wing back Padraic Maher who brought along the Munster Senior Hurling and Minor Football cups, also spoke in glowing terms of ‘Billa’ and Sologhead GAA Club.
Bills sister Mary thanked everyone for coming and showing their appreciation for one of Sologhead GAA Clubs most loyal, dedicated and life long member.
In a must win Junior Football championship game against Golden/Kilfeacle played in Cappawhite on Friday evening last, Sologhead got their championship hopes back on track with a fairly comfortable victory.
From the throw in they set siege on the opposition goalmouth and made the possession pay off at every opportunity running in 5-8 in the first half and whilst not quite as sharp in the second half, went on to add a further 1-4 for a final tally of 6-12 to Goldens 1-3.
Phillip Doherty finished with 2-4, Aidan Riordan and Eoin Riordan 1-3 each, Christopher Hadnett 1-1, Alan Riordan 1-0 and Davy Ryan 0-1 accounted for Sologheads scoring.
A good all round performance which hopefully we can repeat in our remaining preliminary round game against Galtee Rvs.
