Scoil Mhuire Secondary School’s Senior Gaelic Football team narrowly missed out on a place in the All-Ireland Schools final by an agonising two point semi-final defeat to Virginia Community College of Cavan.

The All-Ireland semi-final was played at the Hawkfield GAA Centre in Newbridge, Co. Kildare on Saturday, February 23 and the final score was Virginia Community College 3-07, Scoil Mhuire 2-08.

The Carrick-on-Suir team had the lion’s share of possession in the first ten minutes of the game. An early point from Lorraine Long settled the team, who had two great chances trail slightly wide of goal in quick
succession.

An opportunistic goal from the Cavan girls was quickly answered with two points from Máiréad Power – one from play and one free.

The Virginia team then scored a point from play quickly followed by three unsuccessful attempts that were foiled by strong defensive play from Scoil Mhuire’s backs.

Máiréad Power scored another point from play following an excellent passage of play between Catherine Power and Kellyann Doyle to even the score.

A fallow period for Scoil Mhuire resulted in a goal and two points for Virginia before the Carrick girls replied with a Catherine Power point

and a well-taken goal from Ellen Commins.

A point followed from Aoife Murray before disaster struck with a goal from the Virginia girls leaving the score 1-06 to 3-04 in favour of Virginia at half-time.

A number of substitutions were made at the start of the second half. Virginia were first to score with a point from play but Scoil Mhuire responded with two points from Máiréad Power and one from Eimear Bartley reducing the deficit.

Despite the Carrick’s tireless efforts in midfield and in defence, the Virginia girls found their range and picked off three quick points in succession.

A penalty was awarded to Scoil Mhuire following a foul in the square and Shauna Power kicked the ball to the net to the jubilation of the Scoil Mhuire supporters.

Unfortunately this resurgence came too late and the match ended with Virginia victorious.
