The closure of up to 200 rural Garda Stations cannot be considered by this Government as a cost saving measure and would have an irreversible effect on policing, says South Tipperary/West Waterford Independent TD Mattie McGrath.
“At a time where robberies are happening on a daily basis and rural isolation is at an all time high, it is just outrageous that this Government would even contemplate closing rural Garda stations.”
Deputy McGrath who has been heavily involved with Community Alert and Muintir na Tíre for many years has stressed the importance of the local Garda.
“The local Garda is a vital element of a rural community. They possess a local knowledge that Gardai based in other areas just would not have. You simply cannot get the same level of policing without this local knowledge. The removal of the presence of a local station will also have a detrimental effect in terms of policing Anti Social Behaviour and other crime, he said.
