THE LATE PHILIP “VERE” HUNT
On Tuesday, December 18, the people of Boherlahan, Cashel and the wider population of Tipperary were shocked to learn of
the unexpected death of Philip De Vere Hunt
(“Vere”) of Ardmayle House, Cashel.
It was through his business involvement with Cashel Mart, his close involvement with the agricultural and cattle-breeding fraternity and his contact with so many people through the auctioneering profession, that so many people had known him and benefited from his professional advice and help. It was no surprise that such a large cross-section of mourners attended his funeral.
In the latter years of the eighteen hundreds, Ardmayle House was the property of the Beasley family, but
on the death of its last survivor Olivia Beasley, “Vere’s”
grand-father Francis De Vere Hunt came to live there.
His grand-mother Ada was well known to many of the present inhabitants of Ardmayle, as she spent her later years in “The Lodge”, Clonmore. She is known for her publication of a historical booklet “Cashel and its Abbeys” which was first published in 1952.
On the death of Francis Hunt, the property passed on to Robert De Vere Hunt, who was affectionately known in his family as
“Boss Hunt”. “Boss” learned his trade in the cattle business in his early days in the old cattle fairs around the country and then in
the sixties he took over Cashel Cattle Mart from its original owners, O’Connor and O’Connor Auctioneeers. He also set up an auctioneering business with the Mart.
On his death in 1993, “Vere” and his family took over the Mart. In the early 1970s, “Vere” married Annette Leamy, scion of a well-known Cashel family and they lived with their family ever since at Ardmayle House.
We express our heartfelt sympathy to his broken-hearted wife Annette, to his sons Robert, Philip, Julian and Evan, to his daughter Alison, to his brothers Bob, Peter, Dessie and Raymond, to his sister Frances, grand-children Ada and Robert, daughter-in-law Sarah, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Peace to his Soul.
