OPENING OF SCHOOL 
EXTENSION AND RETIREMENT OF HELEN RUSSELL

An evening of celebration took place in Burncourt last Saturday, May 18, at the official opening of the extension to Burncourt National School and celebration of a lifetime of service and retirement from teaching of Helen Russell. Michael Leonard, Chairperson of the Board of Management, outlined the history of the school extension and spoke with great praise for all involved in the school with particular reference to the contribution made by Pat O’Callaghan and Helen Russell. Mass was a celebration of Helen Russell’s career as a teacher in Burncourt National School with the symbolic gifts and prayers.

The evening concluded with a gathering in Burncourt Community Hall. Included in the presentations was a painting by Maura Fox of Burncourt School which was presented to Helen by Maura’s grandchildren Derval and Shane.

A book containing photos of every Communion Class who Helen had taught. This gift was presented by Anne and Daniel Burke, Ann representing Helen’s first Junior Infants and Daniel her last.
