A wonderful weekend to commemorate Seamus O Maolchathaigh of Cruan took place in Newcastle from Friday, June 29, to Sunday, July 1. Newcastle celebrated its rich cultural and language heritage with Irish lectures, fiddle making, Sean Nos, art workshops, cookery demonstration, heritage and nature walks, plus a wonderful ceolchoirm of local and national talent, Club Leabhar and Tai Chi in Irish. The very successful weekend concluded with Aifreann on Sunday, concelebrated by Fr Gareth Desmond P.P. Newcastle, assisted by Fr Sean Nugent P.P. and Fr Jim Mulcahy P.P. son of Seamus O Maolchathaigh. Fr Jim celebrated 65 years in the priesthood on June 15 last.
Oidhreacht An Caislean Nua, Newcastle Heritage Group want to say mile buiochas to all volunteers, participants, supporters of the Eige, particularly to Newcastle Vintage Club, local FAS scheme, Muintir Na Tire Community Council for all their assistance.
