Cahir U14 girls make history winning Championship

Cahir Camogie Club have created another piece of history by capturing the U14 A County Championship.

Cahir Camogie Club have created another piece of history by capturing the U14 A County Championship.

After a hard and extremely tough battle Cahir emerged winners over a gallant Drom and Inch team in the Ragg on Thursday night last. From the moment the sliothar was thrown in the game was electric. With a strong wind in our favour in the first half, the ball eventually made its way into the forward line where a terrific Caoimhe Condon sent it straight over the bar to register Cahir’s first score.

Mid field was a like a battle zone, but exceptional work by Aoife Corcoran and Grainne Quirke along with help from the half back line of Carol Casey, Aishling Moloney and Eileen Flannery kept the ball up front and Roisin Howard capitalised on a weak moment by the Drom team and sent another great point over the cross bar. With the strong wind hampering the goalies puck out and super work by Katie Farrell, another low ball reached the stick of Caoimhe Condon and she made no mistake in rattling the back of the Drom goal. A foul on Roisin Howard saw Aishling Moloney step up and put another point on the score board and shortly the same famous “sweeper” popped another point over the bar. Just before the half time whistle Caoimhe Condons magic worked again and she scored another super goal to leave the score at half time Cahir 2-4 Drom 0-0.

This was, be assured, a game of two halves! Drom appeared out for the second half and immediately used the wind to their advantage and had 3 points on the score board before the Cahir girls could even catch their breath. At this stage in the game and with the great lead Cahir had going into the second half slipping, the Cahir backs had to up their game 100%. Goalie Keely Halpin was outstanding, clearing her goal mouth constantly. The full back line of Jessica West, Roisin Costigan and Kirsty Arbuckle were under constant pressure from the Drom forwards but they kept their composure and worked tirelessly to defend their goal. A very well cleared ball by Caral Casey, popped into the path of Caoimhe Condon and she pushed Cahir’s lead ahead by another point. As soon as that point was registered on the score board, Drom were back again and had a goal and two points scored in quick succession. With now only two points between the teams and the huge crowd enthralled with the skill and pace of the game, the girls were going to have to up the pace if the championship and history were to be brought back to Cahir. And indeed that was just what they did. Roisin O’ Donnell, Eadaoin O’Gorman and Clare Doyle who had come on for Ellen English, worked like Trojans to keep the sliothar in the Drom back line and were unlucky with a few balls just evading the goal mouth. Roisin Howard’s tremendous skill came to the fore and again she hammered the back of the Drom net. Drom replied with another goal but the ever skillful Aishling Moloney who could be found at any part of the field, ensured that the back lines were kept clear. A bit of a melee around the Drom goal mouth ended with clever thinking on the part of Roisin Howard, when she gathered the sliothar into her hand and scored the last goal of the game with a great hand pass.

Immense credit must go the each and every one of the girls on this panel, their never give up attitude has stood them well and has now earned them the title of worthy County Champions. Along with this honour they will also go on to represent Tipperary in this year’s Camogie Feile competition which will take place in Galway in June.

Accepting the cup, Cahir Captain Caral Casey thanked team manager Mary Howard for her great work with them all over the season along with selectors Carol Keating, Anthony Corcoran, Marie Casey and Martin Halpin. This was a super display of camogie and many thanks to all who came to support the team on the night.
